ABOUT THE AWARDS

The inaugural Town House Influence Awards will honour citizens of Unama'ki/Cape Breton, 65 and older, who have made an outstanding contribution to enrich the social, cultural or civic life of our community.

Nominations are open!

Nominate an older adult who has had a positive INFLUENCE on our community.

Economic Leadership Award

Presented to an older adult in the business community who has been a  mentor, innovator, or substantial contributor to the economic prosperity of Cape Breton Island.

Inspiring Artist Award

Celebrating artistic achievement and/or extraordinary support for, and contributions to, the arts sector on Cape Breton Island.

Remarkable First Nations Elder Award

Honouring the work of an Elder who is an important knowledge keeper and has demonstrated a commitment to ensuring cultural continuity, bringing wisdom, leadership, service, and learning to their people and their community.

Community Builder Award

Recognizes a community champion who has made a significant contribution to their community through volunteerism, philanthropy, or leadership.

Youth Impact Award  

Recognizes a young person (under the age of 30) who is committed to improving the lives of older adults by dedicating a significant amount of time volunteering or working with an organization who provides programs and/or services for older adults.

Excellence in Equity Award

Recognizes the contribution of an older adult who supports the alignment and integration of equity and inclusive principles and practice that has directly benefited members of historically underserved communities, including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, rural community members, and people with lower socioeconomic status.

Service and Support Award

Presented to a business, agency, organization, or individual, serving older adults in Cape Breton that has demonstrated outstanding care, and a commitment to supporting a just and caring society where community members can age with dignity, purpose, and security.

Wellness Champion Award

Presented to an older adult who embodies a healthy active lifestyle and encourages others to engage in healthy living through sport, recreation, or mental health initiatives.

Hilda Wright Lifetime Achievement Award

Honouring and recognizing the long-standing contribution of an exceptional leader within CBRM who has made an indelible impact on our community due to their career, achievements, volunteerism, service, or leadership. 

People’s Choice Award

The People’s Choice selection is based solely on the total number of votes each finalist receives and is separate from the selection of the other category award winners. An individual may win both the People’s Choice award and the category award for which they are a finalist.

Qualifications for a Town House Influence Award 

In order to qualify, nominees must be:​

  • Current residents of Unama'ki/ Cape Breton Island;

  • 65 years of age or older (with the exception of the Youth Impact & Service and Support Awards)

  • Willing to stand for nomination, and agree to participate in internal and external communications to promote the awards and gala.
